F.A.Q.'s for Heat Sealing and Vacuum Sealing

It might be helpful to consider the following questions about your specific application as selecting the right machine will often depend on the answers:

What is the product you want to package? Do you want to Vacuum Seal the product? Do you need a gas flush? Is there liquid or moisture in the product or packaging process? Is the product you want to seal fragile, bulky, a powder, a medical device or instrument? What is the Size of the bag you want to heat seal?

  1. What materials can I seal with my Accu-Seal Heat Sealer?
    Polyethylene, Polypropylene, Nylon, Tyvek, Craft Paper with foil lining, Craft Paper with plastic lining, FEP , Aclar, foil laminants.
  2. What materials can't I heat seal with my Accu-Sealer?
    Materials that cannot be sealed are Denim, Vinyl, Cellophane, and Fiberglass.
  3. How does an impulse heat sealer work?
    Impulse heat is the use of a heat spike governed by time "heat time" followed by a cool down period "cool time" during which the seal jaws remain closed. This cool down period allows the molten plastic in the seal area to cool and reset under pressure providing consistent maximum seal properties. The bond that is created during the "cool down period produces a very strong seal with excellent visual apprearance.
  4. Why should I vacuum seal my product?
    To prevent moisture contamination, extend shelf life, or minimize storage space.
  5. Why should I use Modified Atmosphere packaging (MAP) Nitrogen purge?
    If you are packaging a product where the shelf life of the product can be improved by flushing the bag with gas, such as in packaging fresh foods or coffee. Electronics and chemicals may also benefit from this process to remove moisture and harmful vapors from the bag, decreasing product exposure to corrosion.
  6. Why is a "clean, dry air supply" necessary?
    It is necessary to maintain the warranty and protect the function of the pneumatic systems within the sealer. Air that is not clean and dry can contaminate and damage vital parts of the heat sealing machine.
  7. What is a barrier bag?
    A barrier bag is one which contains non-permeable materials such nylon or metal foil.
  8. Why can't Polyethylene or Polypropylene bags hold vacuum for long term storage?
    These materials are both porous, and allow oxygen and moisture to slowly re-enter the bag.
  9. Do all Accu-Seal Heat Sealers require an external air supply?
    No. Our model 540, carries an internal compressor! Also our model 20 is a manual sealer. Further, if you do not have a compressor it is possible to purchase one through Accu-Seal.
  10. Do you calibrate Heat Sealing machines?
    Accu-Seal can arrange for the Initial calibration and Annual calibration of Medical Heat Sealing machine models: 8000, 830, 730, 6300, 5300/5400, 6400CH and HDMP-TC. Accu-Seal uses an independent metrology company that is ISO certified for all calibrations.
  11. How would I know the appropriate heat and cool times to set my Accu-Seal Heat Sealer for the best quality seals?
    To help ensure the best quality seals, Accu-Seal requests that you send sample pouch or bag materials so that we can provide the heat seal settings for you. Most manufacturers will provide temperatures for sealing each film, this will provide a good starting point for the heat temperature or time. A good starting point for Heat time is 2 seconds. We suggest the Cool time start point to be about two to three times the heat time 200F.
